Mirage (1974)

Camel's second album is very much like the first, though perhaps more refined. There is the same sparcity of singing and abundance of long instrumental sections. Andy's haunting flute on "Supertwister" still sends chills up my spine, and his blazing guitar work in the finale is awesome. The song-suite "Nimrodel" was inspired by Tolkien's Lord of the Rings.

The lefthand picture above is the original cover for the non-U.S. lp. It was changed to the righthand picture for the U.S. lp, ostensibly for legal reasons because the first was too close to the Camel cigarette logo. The CD also uses the lefthand version. Personally, I think the U.S. version is a much cooler picture (I have a larger (50K) jpeg version).
