A Live Record (1978)

This is definitive Camel. Great performances of the best from the first four albums, plus perhaps the only saving grace from the fifth, Rain Dances ("Skylines"), and even a not-to-be-found-anywhere-else song, "Ligging at Louis'", a wonderful instrumental piece recorded around the time of Mirage.

The only thing that keeps this from being the "perfect" Camel live album is the absence of "Another Night" (my personal favorite Camel song). I had the privilege of seeing them live myself right around this time, and they didn't perform it then either. And it doesn't appear on any of their other live albums (of which there are now five). Before Camel's 1997 tour, I semi-jokingly asked Susan Hoover to ask Andy to play it on the tour. She told me sometime later that they did in fact try it out in rehearsal, but just couldn't get it to sound right; for some reason it doesn't lend itself to being played live.

This is a two-record (or two-cd) set, and the entire second disc is devoted to a superb live performance of The Snow Goose in its entirety. As far as I know, this was the only time Camel played the whole thing live and I actually prefer it over the original, studio version.

This album is an absolute must-have for any fan, and I would highly recommend it as a first purchase for someone interested in "trying out" Camel.
